Dogwood

SR 161 Mount Rainier Viewpoint
Prior to the development of this viewpoint, sudden stops by tourists
were becoming a traffic hazard at this location as motorists
pulled
to the shoulder to enjoy the spectacular view of majestic Mount
Rainier. Upon the recommendation of Mrs. W.J. (Elsie)
Hughes,
resident of Ohop Valley, near Eatonville, and with the support from
the Washington State Senator Marilyn Rasmussen,
the
Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) purchased the
1.3 acre site in 1989. Elsie had found her 'End of
the
rainbow', the perfect spot for this magnificent viewpoint.
The
large viewpoint sign was provided and is maintained by Washington
State Parks. A bronze Centennial marker is located at the
base.
The site was officially dedicated in a Washington State Centennial
ceremony on November 6, 1989. Since then, the
viewpoint
has been transformed through a lot of hard work and cooperation by
adding tree, shrub and flower plantings, installing
site
features, and providing ongoing maintenance. The two garden
benches were purchased by the Dogwood Garden Club. The
Blue
Star Memorial Highway marker was dedicated on September 14, 1994.
The
plantings and maintenance activities are done by the Dogwood Garden
Club, the Eatonville High School Landscape Class, the
Eatonville
Elementary Junior Garden Club, and WSDOT. Plantings were
coordinated through WSDOT Landscape Architect Bob
Barnes.
From all those created and continued to maintain this viewpoint,
please enjoy your stay in "Our little corner of the
world".
