of sign:
An American Eden
The
Herds of Lamar Valley
Lamar
Valley supports a remnant of the vast wildlife herds that once roamed North
America. Here the particular mix of conditions
creates
ideal habitat for elk and bison. The wide, open valley makes predators
easy to spot. Tasty sedges border streams and
damp
meadows; forbs and bunch grasses cover slopes. During Yellowstone's
extended winters, temperatures are relatively
moderate
at this lower elevation, and snow cover is usually shallow enough to allow
foraging.
Though
the scene approximates primitive wilderness, human presence inevitably alters
the balance. Use binoculars and telephoto
lenses.
Do not disturb the animals to get a closer picture.
The
chance of sighting large herds depends on the season. In
midsummer the greatest number of elk and bison are in the mountains
on
either side of the valley.

addition to the text there is a picture of a large elk herd in the snow
another picture of a coyote over an elk carcass.
